These French Jet or crepe stone 18x8mm cresents are facetted black glass or black crystal. (not fossilised wood). Manufactured from the late 1800s - 1930s in the former Czechoslovakia using hand cutting techniques these beads are flat on one side and cut on the other with 2 holes drilled through them.

Crescent Moons during the Victorian Era represented spirituality, femininity, and new beginnings. It’s the oldest known symbol to man and dates to the second millennium BC. It grew in popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras as it was associated with change and fresh starts, just as the phase of moon changes every night and starts over again every month. It makes sense to find this powerful symbol of change and transformation on a set of mourning earrings. They would have been worn by someone who just lost someone dear, looking for a new beginning.

They are extremely versatile. Mount them on filigree stampings, sew them onto garments and string them to create unique bracelets and chokers.

Note: they have a makers mark on the back which makes them reversible. Like all glass, it will be colder to the touch and heavier than Whitby jet or vulcanite.
