TRENDING: ANIMAL PRINT
Animal print is having a moment. (or is it a classic staple which has stood the test of time?) Have you noticed it is everywhere? From quilt covers to hot pants this season we have all gone crazy for animal print. So if you have not already embraced this timesless trend here are some reasons why we love it and a little bit of history too!
Some tribes have been wearing actual animal skin for thousands of years which has become their distinctive traditional dress and communicated where they are from, their stautus and their power for example. From calf hides to sheep skins and everything inbetween has been worn by tribes for clothing, protection from often harsh environments and even breastplates. Think the Native Americans with deer hide, bison or buffalo or the Aboriginals with possum fur coats. In Zimbabwe the animal skin is important in Zimbabwean traditional dress as each Ndebele group associated with a different animal, allowing individuals to outwardly convey their allegiance to their own group. More exotic in pattern is the leopard print, tiger print, zebra print and snake print.
So where did the Western trend originate from?
With the first global economy, exploration and colonisation Europeans brought home the skins of the leopards, tigers, and zebras. Those exotic patterns were soon reproduced on fabrics (for the wealthy), leaving their mark on clothing and decor. Two centuries later, sex symbols, THINK Lauren Bacall and Marilyn Monroe, for example, harnessed the prints’ sex appeal.
Why we Love Wearing Animal Print?
Animal prints are like neutrals—they are made up of brown, grey, camel, and black, after all.
They’re seasonless, and you can wear them with almost anything.
They add a little edge to your wardrobe. A little bit sassy.
How to Wear It?
Personally I prefer to wear in small doses!
Combine animal print with a neutral such as black, white, toffee or camel.
Wear with metallics. Personally, I love teaming animal print with gold or with emerald green.
RULE: Make your own animal print accessories which can be just as eye-catching and the most economical way to transform your wardrobe this season.
Why don’t you make your own animal print inspired earrings or necklace and transform your wardrobe without breaking the bank!
